^^^ God, it's so fucking annoying. He does it all the time.

We have automated jobs that run day and night. One of the parameters for setting up a job is to define how long the job should run before sending an alert saying that it's running a long time and to check it.

So we get an alert that literally says, "Job XYZ has been running 300 minutes. Please verify job is running properly."

What does he do? Forwards that to us (we've already gotten it), saying, "Guys, this job has been running a long time, someone needs to check it."

Thanks, I would have never figured that out.

Not a rant so much as a random thought/worry: the old exec director of our department retired about a month ago. They’ve announced the new exec director has been hired. They went with an external candidate, even though I know that some internal people had applied. To me, that signals that they’re looking to make some changes. I wonder how much things are going to be shaken up; I have a sneaking suspicion that the new person may be being brought in to roll some heads.

Interesting times, for sure. I’m hoping I’m safe (and I don’t want to get cocky, but I think I will be; I’m not high up on the ladder and I’d like to think I’m a good worker. Also my budget is minuscule). It’ll be interesting to see who stays and who goes. The new person starts in a month.

Regardless, it’s always stressful when one of the high executive positions changes. It can signal a completely new strategic direction.

I hate stupid customers, but I do get a great bit of pleasure telling people "I don't know" and watching their faces twist up with shock and a bit of rage.
I'm a merchandiser, clearly wearing a shirt/uniform that indicates I don't work at the store. No matter how much they may shout, I still don't work there.
No preamble. "Where's the ___?"
"I don't know." "Not a clue" "no idea"
"..You don't know?" they spit as they glare at me.
"Nope. I don't work here."

Fuuuuuuuck...

We rolled out a new system a year ago and as usual, it was rushed to deployment and it's been a piece of crap since, and a total nightmare to support.

We're all pushed to the max, working a shitload of extra hours (salaried, so no extra pay), and we just had a meeting with our managers, saying that the other two teams we work with (users and development team) don't feel like we're "visible enough," and therefore, not actually doing anything!

As such, we now have to attend two new daily meetings that have absolutely nothing to do with us, all because we'll be seen. Not only that, one meeting is every morning at 8:30AM, and I don't start until 9AM!

So now I get to start work 30 minutes early, to attend a meeting that has zero to do with anything I do, and I get to attend a second useless meeting that occurs during when I usually take my lunch. All so we can prove that yes, we're at least at work. :x

That's the way of things in IT. Never time (or money) to do it right but always time (or money) to do it again.

That's some bullshit right there. They should know you're working by the fact that shit is getting done. There is a lot of this where I work too.

This crap about 'being seen to be being seen' gets on my tits, companies invest millions in tech to enable remote working, spouting about being all 'green' and eco-conscious and workers well-being, raving about how they're doing their bit cutting down on polluting worker travelling and saving everyone money. Then some sod moans about 'visibility'. I could understand if they moaned shit wasn't being done, but just wanting to see your pretty face is worse than pointless, while you're busy 'being seen' shit isn't getting done.

I used to have to go over to Ireland once a month just because of this, it didn't matter I spoke to them everyday, had monthly video conferences and weeking conference calls. No, that wasn't 'visible' enough, for some reason they NEEDED to see my lardy arse filling a seat in their office (while I did exactly the same stuff I would have been doing if I'd have been sitting in my own office). God, I'm so glad I retired, it wasn't the job that pissed me off it was exactly this type of bollocks.

Here's the thing - the root of it is that our user community is strictly forbidden from working from home, and our dev team, their manager feels that it restricts "collaboration," so they're fairly limited. Our team is the only one who does it routinely, and not every day. For us three grunts, someone is in the office every day - it's just that many times, only one of us is in the office on any given day.

This cheeses everyone off to no end - especially the user community, because they don't really know what we do anyway, except "make the computer thingy work." One of the managers for the user side constantly tries to sabotage anyone working from home, even though it's plainly stated company policy that every effort should be made to allow employees to work from home as much as possible. In her mind, working from home equals fucking off from home, and she's said as much, and she's constantly grumbling because her manager won't let her team work from home. It's so goddamn petty, it's ridiculous, a 55yo person acting that way.

Today was supposed to be a good day, but I'm furious...

So, for the past 6.5 years, we've worked 4 10 hour days with Fridays off. I'm hourly and my work is tied to when the office is open, so I've wrapped my entire life around doing all my personal shit on Fridays - doctor, dentist, car servicing, house repairs... all so I can devote my whole work day to, you know, being at work. I also have to cover for 2 other people, so having a day I know I can schedule stuff is invaluable.

Fast forward to now... and they want us to work an hour less Mon-Thurs and come in for 4 hours Friday morning...

This sucks in so many ways. I have so much stuff planned on Fridays - trips etc. I told the new boss that I didn't want to work Fridays because of the reasons above, and he initially said that my boss and I were exempt...but I just know my boss will cave and agree for us both to fall in line. I'm always freakin' there (I've lost vacation time almost every year, including the one year they changed the entire vacation scheme and I lost 200 accrued hours!). I was planning to have work done on our bathrooms, to go away over Xmas and New Year... now it's all screwed up! I'm angry and upset. Everyone else can come and go as they please, or work from home.

WTF? I'd absolutely put your foot down. And I'd also start taking those vacation hours. You earn them, you're entitled to them, take them! How they cover your job while you're away is their problem, not yours.

There isn't any point in going in to work for four hours. You barely get started and then you're done. 4 x 10 is so much more productive from a work viewpoint. And if you have those hours in writing, then you don't have to agree to an arbitrary change - that can actually be construed as a constructive dismissal.

^^Totally agree. You’re entitled to the vacation time that you have earned, and you can take it as you please. Someone doesn’t like it? Tough. You’re entitled to that vacation time.

I earn a really good amount of vacation time at my job (working in the same place for a long time does have its perks), and you bet your ass I take every single day of it. I have earned that vacation time by working, and I am entitled to take as much of it as I please. As long as my manager signs off on it, I can take vacation whenever I like.
