Relevant to the discussion: some guys went on a tour of rude place names in the UK and documented them all with selfies: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as ... 1.5118681
I can't believe there's actually a street named Butthole Lane.

LadyPhoenix, I'm in the same boat as you with the places I've been: Canada, the US, and Scotland. That's it.

That having been said, Canada and the US are both such huge places with so much to see, I feel like you could spend a lot of time travelling in them without getting bored. I went to an international conference on the other side of Canada a few years ago, and a lot of the European conference attendees were absolutely astonished that I could get on a plane, fly for 5 hours, and still be in the same country. Canada's huge.

^^^ Yep. I went for a motorcycle ride in Europe, and in 5 hours, we'd been to three countries (France, Italy and Switzerland).

My first plan for retirement is to spend a couple of years rattling around the US and Canada in a van. I'm sure it would take at least that long!

One of the only two countries bigger than the US. Russia being the other. When I flew from San Diego to DC it took 5 hours. Oddly enough San Diego to Honolulu was also around 5 hours.

Sounds like my time in the northeast US. Twice it was 5 states in 8 or 9 hours. First day driving from DC to just outside NYC was Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Then when I left NJ for Boston it was New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Them states are small (except New York). By contrast if I want to get out of California, here are the drive times.

Arizona: 3 hours
Nevada: 5 hours
Oregon: 12.5 hours
Baja California, Mexico: 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. :)

And California is only the third biggest state. Don't even get me started on Texas. Never been to Alaska so I can't comment there.

I have a friend who works in Texas sometimes, and he says that outback Texas is the middle of BF nowhere.

Cali's long, more than it is big. Getting across it doesn't take that long, but getting from one end to the other takes days. Kind of like when I lived in Auckland, as compared to Calgary. Populations about the same, but I can drive pretty much anywhere in Calgary, which is laid out in a circle, in an hour. In Auckland, because it's on a narrow piece of land, driving from one end to the other takes literally three times that.

But even small countries take weeks to visit properly. I was in Italy for two weeks and only scratched the surface of half of it - I still have to go and do the other half sometime. Likewise with New Zealand ... people see it as this little place that shouldn't take long to drive around, and think that a week is long enough to see most of it. Not even close. I could plan two weeks in "tiny" countries like Ireland, or Scotland, or Belize or Peru, and still not see everything I wanted.

Your friend isn't wrong about Texas. I know that one first hand.
