Okay, sheets and dishes and such are normal. WTF with the SIX SOFAS?

My rant: about a year ago we bought a new TV, plus sound bar and sub-woofer. It's on our wifi. Occasionally it's randomly cut out, and I've had to call tech support to help get the thing back online. Annoying thing: it's really best set up through an app, which my phone really doesn't seem to like. Then right after Christmas we completely moved the TV set up and mounted it on the wall (except the sub-woofer, of course). Mr. Tempest got the app to work on his tablet, and while the sound bar showed up on the app, bass unit did not. Called tech support. Found out that the bass unit, while compatible with the sound bar, is NOT compatible with the app. We got it working, but unless you basically have tech support helping, it's not at all intuitive. The sales person at the store did NOT tell us this a year and a half ago. It wasn't an issue until now. Too late to take the thing back. Probably no point to calling the store and venting my spleen at them. At this point, it's a year later. Ugh.

Mr LaT works for the prison service and works nights (7 on 7 off). Early hours of Thursday morning, as he was doing his checks to make sure the inmates are still alive when one of the scumbags throws a cup of piss in his face through the (broken) viewing glass in the cell door. It gets in his eyes and mouth and on his shirt.

So Mr LaT gets told 'get to the hospital and get your blood tested, it'll have to be done within 72 hours then it'll have to be done again in 3 months'....of course we don't know if scumbag has any nasty diseases because his medical records are confidential.

The A&E dept at the hospital won't take his blood.... 'it's not a priority unless you know he has some nasty disease' you can then imagine the following conversation about medical records being confidential. Anyhoo, he gets told to go to his own GP he'll draw the blood and send it off for testing, so Mr LaT gets home at 04:30 in the morning, waking me up because I've locked the door (leaving the key in the lock) and he can't get in.

He then has several showers and paces about until he can get hold of the surgery at 08:30. Conversation is had and he's booked in with nurse first thing this morning (Fri). However the Dr may wish to talk to him before then so he may, or may not, get a call sometime Thursday. He's in bed as he works nights, so I wait around all day....no call!

Thursday night I get a message ' the prison want to send his shirt off for testing, if it is urine then the inmate concerned will be prosecuted'. I then have to fish about in the bin to retrieve the shirt which is now covered and stained with coffee grounds.

Friday morning at 08:15 phone rings, it's the surgery.....phone then crackles like mad for 5 minutes then packs in altogether. He tries to ring surgery on mobile and can't get through. He trots off to his appointment and finds the nurse has rung in sick, hence the call from the surgery . There then follows a 3 way conference call with GP, Mr LaT and some blood specialist from the hospital where the conclusion was as there was no blood involved so there's nothing to worry about...

If all this wasn't enough of a dogs breakfast the prison has a medical nurses on the premises all day and night, 24/7/365 but their protocols won't let them take his blood. They also have an Occupational Health team who can take his blood, but they're all off for the Xmas break not returning until Monday 6 Jan, because prison officers never get assaulted over the Xmas holidays, do they!

More fun with emergency alerts today!

I woke up at 7:30 to the sound of the air-raid siren noise on my phone. I think it’s probably another stupid Amber alert, then I check the message - nope. Apparently, there’s an “incident” at a nuclear power plant. The alert message specifically says that there’s been no abnormal release of radiation, no action is required at this time, and that the message only applies to those within 10 km of the plant (I live about 60 km away). So...they sent out an emergency alert to tell everyone that everything is fine?

So I went back to sleep. A full hour and 45 minutes later, the air-raid siren noise goes off again. The message says (paraphrasing, obviously): “Whoopsie! That last message was a mistake, there’s no nuclear incident. Oopsie daisy! Everything is fine lolz!”

This emergency alert system is so beyond broken.

So I am trying to get my Canadian passport, so that I can go and visit my mother this summer for her 90th birthday. I have a valid EU passport, because I have dual citizenship and living in the UK, that has been more useful to me. I haven't been back to Canada in about 15 years. I then discovered that since 2016, Canadians with dual nationality must enter Canada on a valid Canadian passport, so here we go with the application.

I get all the documentation and the stupid-size Canadian passport photos...and then discover they won't give me a passport because my legal name in the UK and in Austria are not what it says on my Canadian birth certificate. In the UK, I have always been known by a nickname of my birth name, and that is what is on all my documentation including my drivers license. In Austria, I legally changed my name to the nickname, so that is what is on my passport. They tell me I legally need to change it in Canada (Quebec), and get a new birth certificate issued.

Nope. Turns out that to be eligible for that (drawn-out and expensive process) you have to be domiciled in Quebec. So I go back to the Canadian High Commission and they say, okay, we will try with what you've got and see if they can make an exception, which they sometimes do in these situations. So I send back the application, with all the photos and documents. Most are copies, but they require the original birth certificate.

Today I get a bunch of it back from the mail, which has failed to deliver it and has LOST some of the envelope's contents. All of which I have copies of and can send again. Except the original birth certificate. This is now missing. I fortunately took a photocopy, but I'm guessing they won't accept that for the application.

I'm starting to think there is some kind of conspiracy to keep me out of Canada.

I thought the same when I was applying for the Canadian ETA ( I'm Australian) I accidently ticked the wrong box on the application. Entry denied. Email after email. I had to create an account with the worlds least user friendly website- the Canadian gov't. Eventually I gave up and got the travel agent to do it. Like you, I wondered if "do they not want visitors" It was well worth all the BS, friendly people, beautiful country. We'll go back!

Jeez, and I did my NZ passport renewal online today and it couldn't have been easier. The longest part was figuring out how to resize the digital passport photo I had taken - the original was too small and I had to make it bigger. But the rest of it? Took me about 15 minutes.

That's nuts with all that paperwork and red tape. In the US, it's not that difficult, though maybe it is if it's a unique situation like yours.

When I got my first passport in 1992, I was in the military, and we needed passports because I was being transferred to the UK. When you get orders, you usually get them then several months in advance, and you also get a big checklist of everything you have to accomplish to leave, like getting any required shots, getting your household goods scheduled for shipping, and getting passports.

I'd always known that passports could take 6-10 weeks, so I was surprised when it was listed as one of the last things to do on my checklist, and I asked the passport office, and they said, "Well, orders frequently get cancelled, so we save that until near the end, when we're certain you're going."

Well, I'm a worrier with stuff like that, so as it got closer and closer, I was getting more and more anxious, and I kept asking about it, and they kept telling me (rudely at times) to chill about it.

Sure enough, they gave me an appointment for us to come in and get everything taken care of, and it was a Friday, and we were leaving the following week.

Friday afternoon, we came in, filled out the paperwork, they took our photos, and I asked again about getting them, and all he would say was, "We'll call you when they're ready."

Got to work Monday morning, 7:30AM, and I already had a voicemail on my phone that they were ready. Took them all of a few minutes to put them together and get them stamped and signed and made official. Just shows how quickly things can get done when they want to do them. :)

I think it took us 3 weeks to get our first US Passport. It was certainly quicker than getting our new SS Card! The UK Passports take longer because we have to send everything back to the UK, wait, then wait for them to be sent back to us - and they use DHL, which is an uncommon courier service here in the US.

Goshdarn motherfrapping* neighbors kids were screaming and jumping on that stupid trampoline when DH and I got back from grocery shopping tonight. After several minutes, I went out back and asked them to please keep the noise down - and got abuse for it, including mocking my accent. So I told them to Shut the Frap* up and came back inside... and then recorded them still screaming on my phone where they couldn't see me... then an adult came out (yes, there was an adult home!), and from what I could hear, I'm the bad guy... So I've sent an email to our HOA with the video of the screaming, and a photo of their trash at the side of the house to boot... and now I'm pissed and I have a headache... >:(

*Sanitised to protect the innocent...

So... things escalated a tad after last night's post. To the point that we actually had to call the police to go next door this afternoon....

About 10 mins after my post last night, we heard a thump at the front of the house. DH checked the security cameras, then headed to the front of the house. A whole gang of teens from next door were starting to throw TP around our front yard but stopped when he confronted them. Some had the decency to apologise and help clean up - one young lady said they'd just arrived. I told her they were all adults and should know better. Soon after, all the kids left and things got quiet, so we went to bed.

This morning, it was still quiet. THere was some TP in their yard, and a couple of rolls at the front of their house, but none in ours. We headed out for errands about 10.30am and got back around noon to find all the TP was gone. After eating a quick lunch, we were headed out again when something floating in the pool caught my eye - a roll of TP. I fished out three rolls and stopped a large pile falling in the water, but the pumps were on and there was at least some TP in the pool. Sure enough, when DH checked the camera, 5 girls from next door threw the TP over the side wall into the pool.

Now, to the layperson, this doesn't sound like a big deal... except that the TP is now in our pool filtration system. If more had got in (if the pumps had been on summer mode instead of winter), it would have destroyed the filters, the cleaning system, the leaftrapper and probably blown all 3 pumps = thousands of dollars. As it is, we will have to strip and clean the filters sooner than normal. DH was furious and talked to the cops. THey said as there was no damage (yet) we couldn't file a complaint, but they would go over there if we wanted. We did, and a few hours later a cop did show up and did go next door.

I sent two emails to the HOA last night, and have yet to email regarding this morning's BS. To say we're furious is an understatement. Thank heavens DH put those cameras in - we have video footage and stillframes of them in the act both times.
